How Much Do Animals Sleep?

Did you know that a horse only sleeps (on average) 3 hours a day?  These students are reading about different animals and then turning the sleeping hours into fractions.  If a horse sleeps 3 hours a day, that is 1/8 of the day!  These students also are working on adding and subtracting fractions using these same animal numbers.

Check out the five animals that sleep the most, on average.
  1. Brown Bat: 19.9 hours per day.
  2. Giant Armadillo: 18.1 hours per day.
  3. North American Opossum: 18 hours per day.
  4. Python: 18 hours per day.
  5. Owl Monkey: 17 hours per day.

Jean Labadie's Big Black Dog

2nd and 3rd Graders at Walton can't wait to hear a good story!  Here they are reading about Jean Labadie's Big Black Dog!  You want to know the secret?  Jean doesn't actually own a dog.  He just makes up the story to keep his pesky neighbors away from his property after some of his chickens have gone missing.  The real problem is that the crazy neighbor believes in the Big Black dog and convinces everyone in town to believe in the Big Black Dog, too!  Crazy!
